When someone is tailgating me, I step on my brake pedal just enough to make
my brakelights go on and also step on the accelerator at the same time.

Usually only takes doing this once or twice for people to get the message.

I don't know where you live but in the Seattle/Tacoma area that is the way
it is.  My friend says she is honked at everywhere she goes.  I asked her
how fast she drives and she said the speed limit.  I said well that's the
dang problem.  If you don't drive over (by at least 10 mph), you get honked
at or tailgated around here.  Our freeway speed is 60 so that means if you
don't want to get run down, you best be driving 75-80.  You will get the
Nascar tap otherwise!  My sister comes over from Boise and just can't stand
Seattle traffic.  She says she can deal with the amount of cars just not the
speed.  I said, oh, yeah they go about 80 everywhere.  If you drive 70 (in a
60) you will have cars blowing your doors off!  I was talking with my friend
from Alabama and she said it is nice and slow there and they don't even get
mad if you sit through a green light.  I said, oh dear, you do that here you
will get bumped on through if not shot!  That of course is if anyone bothers
to stop at a red light or a stop sign!  Driving is horrendous around here!
We do have a lot of soldiers returning from Iraq and they are having trouble
adjusting -- several of them cannot get used to driving "normal".  They just
hit the pedal and go.  My friend says they are just used to driving convoy
and panic when they get in clusters of cars (Oh, great!)  Then we have a lot
of retirees and believe me those are the ones running the stop signs!  So if
you get the feeling you want to come to the Seattle/Tacoma area wear your
flack jacket, helmet, body armor and come and enjoy Nascar racing at it's
best on Interstate 5!!! :)

I totally agree with that. Every time we go to Seattle we have to allow an
extra 2 hours for the inevitable wreck at Tacoma.

You may get shot slowing down in this area, seriously.  We have had several
shootings on I-5 lately and road rage has been ruled the reason.  Personally
these idiots drive me nuts and DH is always telling me I am going to get
shot as I do the same thing. The thing that is really wacky is the ones
putting on mascara while they drive, reading books/newspapers, etc.  We had
a woman who had a wreck in Port Orchard on a two-lane highway -- she was
eating a bowl of cereal!

I do that, too.  Usually, though, I simply pull over to let the impatient
person go by.  I also wave as they do that, being sure to do it with all
five fingers.

In the daytime I just turn on my lights which has the same effect since the
driver who's tailgating doesn't know that my lights are on.

We went to a dog show match up north (Central Florida) a couple of weeks
ago--Florida Turnpike and I95.  Speed limit was 70 most of the way.  I was
driving between 70 and 80 (nearer 80) most of the way and hardly ever passed
a car and had scores of them zoom by me!  At least I found out our new mini
mini van (Pontiac Vibe) was comfortable driving at those speeds.  We're
quite pleased with our new car.  We'll see how it is 10 years from now!

I generally just take my foot off the gas pedal until they pass me.
Usually doesn't take long.

I prefer my method because if they are already tailgating me, I don't want
them any closer than they already are.

Seeing my brakelights go on hopefully gives them some idea of why tailgating
is a bad thing, and stepping on the gas gives me more distance than less
distance from a dangerous driver.
